Dental and Vision Care Abroad Compared to the U.S.

Medicare doesn't cover routine dental or vision care. That's a rude awakening for a lot of retirees - suddenly you're looking at $1,500 for a crown or $400 for glasses out of pocket. If you've heard that costs abroad are a fraction of U.S. prices, you've heard right. But "how much cheaper" and "is the quality actually there" are fair questions.

The short answer: yes, it's dramatically cheaper in most popular retirement destinations, and quality in major cities is often on par with what you'd get back home. Here's what the numbers look like and what to watch out for.

What Dental Work Costs Abroad vs. the U.S.

In the U.S., a crown runs $1,000–$2,000. A root canal is $800–$1,500. A routine cleaning without insurance? Easily $150. Abroad, those same procedures look like this:

  • Mexico: Crowns $250–500, root canals $200–400, cleanings $30–50
  • Thailand: Crowns $150–400, root canals $150–300, cleanings $25–40
  • Portugal: Crowns $400–700, root canals $300–500, cleanings $40–80
  • Costa Rica: Crowns $450–650, root canals $350–500, cleanings $50–75

You're looking at 50%–80% savings in most cases. That's why dental tourism is a real thing - some retirees fly to Mexico twice a year for dental work and still come out ahead compared to getting it done in Arizona.

Many dentists in Mexico, Thailand, and Colombia trained in the U.S. or Europe and actively cater to international patients. Look for clinics with international accreditations or clear affiliations with Western dental associations - those are usually your safest bets.

Vision Care: Exams and Glasses for a Lot Less

Eye exams in the U.S. run $50–$250, and a decent pair of prescription glasses is easily $200–$500. Abroad, both cost a fraction of that:

  • Thailand: Eye exams $15–30, glasses $50–150
  • Mexico: Eye exams $20–40, glasses $60–120
  • Vietnam: Eye exams $10–20, glasses $30–80
  • Malaysia: Eye exams $15–35, glasses $40–100

Quality holds up well in major cities, where optometrists use modern equipment. In Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, you can walk into a shop, get an exam, and walk out with new glasses the same day - often for under $100 total.

Does Insurance Cover Any of This?

Most international health insurance plans don't cover routine dental or vision - same as Medicare. Some higher-tier plans include limited dental coverage for major or emergency work, but cleanings, crowns, and glasses are typically out of pocket.

That said, paying out of pocket abroad is still cheaper than paying out of pocket in the U.S. A year of cleanings, one crown, and new glasses might run you $800 in Thailand versus $3,000 or more at home. Many retirees budget $500–$1,000 per year for dental and vision abroad and find that's plenty.

If you've got significant dental work coming up, consider timing it around your move - or plan a trip specifically for it. Mexico, Thailand, and Costa Rica have built entire industries around dental tourism, with English-speaking staff and upfront pricing.

How to Find a Good Provider

Quality varies. In countries with strong healthcare infrastructure - Thailand, Portugal, Malaysia - you'll generally find well-trained professionals and modern clinics. Smaller towns and less-developed areas are a different story.

  • Check for international accreditations or affiliations with Western dental associations
  • Read reviews from other expats - Facebook groups and expat forums are your best resource here
  • Ask about sterilization practices and equipment before committing
  • Make sure your dentist or optometrist speaks enough English to discuss your care clearly

Most retirees report solid experiences, especially in cities with established expat communities. Providers there are used to working with Americans and often take more time with patients than rushed U.S. offices do.
